The High Bridge Estuary

The High Bridge Estuary is a proposal for the HB:BX Ideas Competition sponsored by the AIA and the Bronx Art Museum. The competition required a re-engagement of the High Bridge, a historic bridge on the Harlem River in New York.

This design uses the Harlem River’s own estuarine ecosystem as a design framework. In biology, an estuary is defined as a place in which fresh and salt water systems combine, producing an entirely unique, diverse environment. The idea of an estuary is used as a design tool through which tension amongst the many contrasting forces of the site are celebrated, and binaries are dissolved and replaced with
synthesis.
